Concentrated Solar Power Cooling Technology (CSP)
In effort to diversify energy supply, renewable energy sources are the right answer. At Sončna energija d.o.o. we have developed a product that uses directly solar thermal energy for cooling, where parabolic trough collectors and track the sun during the daytime in two axes. With a high temperature vacuum absorber the concentrated sunlight is converted into thermal energy. The thermal oil is heated up to 150 degree Celsius. In the absorption cooling unit we use hot oil for running the cooling process, where water output temperature of 7 degree Celsius is reached. For the cooling power of 15 KW, the parabolic trough collectors of 21 m2 concentrate sunlight in two dimensions reaching the highest concentration ratios are installed on a metal structure. For this efficiency, the product the air temperature can be 35 degrees Celsius. The cooling equipment uses the closed process; hence there is no need for any additional cooling water. The additional 15% of electric energy which system needs for running the complete process is obtained from solar panels – photovoltaic modules.
Because on open market is very difficult to buy key components (absorber tubes, parabolic trough collectors, dual axis tracking system), at Sončna energija d.o.o. we have decided to develop the technology for the in-house production of these components. The company has already filed the patent documentation for this product; therefore, the production cost can be very competitive. A high-quality absorption cooling unit has been outsourced. We have already developed and produced the parabolic trough collector and the dual axis tracking system. The machinery for the production of absorber (receiving) tubes has already been supplied. The first prototype will be finished by the end of 2010.
Our product helps diversify a country's energy portfolio in an environmentally responsible manner particularly where lands have good solar resources and suitable slopes in the vicinity of residential and industrial areas, close to holiday resorts and recreational facilities. If the CSP unit is installed on a flat roof, additional cooling effect will be obtained, because the parabolic through collectors provide additional protection from the direct solar radiation. The opportunity for successful international business growth is high. The company will not depend on any technology outsourcing, because its experts have already developed all key components. For concentrating solar technologies in general and for the solar cooling system in particular to further expand the market share in countries with high solar radiation is a fact. Venture capital would speed up production capacity and facilitate internationalization.
Only a few companies in the world manufacture PARABOLIC COLLECTOR MIRRORS and HIGH TEMPERATURE ABSORBERS. Sončna energija d.o.o. has a big chance to come also with these two KEY components on the market. The world plan is that 4 billion m2 of parabolic mirrors and 200 million HIGH TEMPERATURE absorbers will be needed until 2040 (the Greenpeace-ESTIA scenario considers that in 2040, CSP plants could total 630 GW). Both components are also used for the Concentrated Solar Power process, where electricity is produced from an electric generator running with steam turbine. In this system, parabolic mirror synthetic oil is heated in the ABSORBER up to 400 degree Celsius.
The company is looking for venture capital EUR 28.6 million. The new company will be established where venture investors will get 49-51 %. The limited liability company SONCNA ENERGIJA d.o.o. will transfer to this new company all know-how and the patent right for all KEY components, the completed unit and all existing equipment for production.
The estimated ROI and ROE time is 12 years. NPV of EUR 900,000 and IRR 6.5% can be expected.
All technology development and prototype production costs have already been covered by SONČNA ENERGIJA d.o.o. where also private investors and a bank credit line have been used. Should venture capital be made available by the deadline for incentive funding, up to EUR 10 million in incentives from the Slovenian government and from the EU funds can be received.
Additional venture capital will be used for speeding up mass production facility in Slovenia and other countries. All over the world patenting and marketing also will be part of the required investment.
The solar cooling equipment has a lifetime twice the lifetime of a standard compressor cooling unit. Investment cost is 4 times higher, but operation cost is practically zero. We expect maintenance cost to be up to 3% of the complete solar cooling equipment cost per year or 10 times less than for a conventional cooling unit.
