Ljubljana, 04 December (STA) - Banking paper The Banker has selected Abanka Vipa as Slovenia's top bank for 2009. Slovenia's third-largest bank was selected on the basis of its results in challenging times and for progress it has made in electronic banking, Abanka said.
The Banker conferred awards for best banks in 144 countries and six regions in London on Thursday. It also picked the world's best bank for 2009 - the award went to Spanish bank Santander.
Abanka Vipa won the award for Slovenia with the help of its stock market listing in October 2008, which marked the end of a capital injection that had contributed importantly to providing capital adequacy at the bank in time of crisis.
"With the right measures at the right time, the bank has managed to alleviate the consequences of the financial crisis on operations and implement most of its goals," Abanka chairman Ales Zajdela commented on the award.
