Brussels Stops Proceedings over Vignettes

Brussels, 29 January (STA) - The European Commission on Thursday formally stopped proceedings against Slovenia over its motorway toll stickers system, European Transport Commissioner Antonio Tajani's press representative Fabio Pirotta said in Brussels on Friday.

The Commission stopped the proceedings because analyses had shown the new Slovenian tolling system is in line with the European legislation, Pirotta said.

The European Commission launched infringement proceedings against Slovenia in the beginning of October 2008, calling on it to start offering short-time motorway stickers aside from annual and half-yearly vignettes and thus stop what the Commission said was discriminatory treatment of occasional users on Slovenian toll roads.

The Slovenian government subsequently introduced weekly and monthly vignettes on 1 July which are replacing the half-yearly stickers and complementing annual ones.
