Maribor, 14 April (STA) - Envit, a company specialising in ecological technology, was named startup of the year at the Podim conference of innovation and entrepreneurship on Wednesday.
Spun-off from the University of Ljubljana, the company was founded by three researchers and is involved in the clean-up of areas polluted with heavy metals.
They developed a technology that improves the efficiency of cleanup at lower cost, said the 22-member award jury comprised of successful businessmen and researchers.
Envit was named winner in a field of 30 applicants in a competition jointly organised by the business incubator of the University of Maribor, Technological Park Ljubljana, Slovenian Business Angels and the Trade and Investment Promotion Office.
Handing the award to director and co-founder Neza Finzgar, Development Minister Mitja Gaspari said innovation and creativity took centre stage in the government's strategy to overcome the economic crisis.
He said Slovenia was amidst a period of decline in economic activity, but this is coupled with an uptick in entrepreneurial activity.
The 30th annual Podim is focusing this year on how to sell innovative ideas. Some 300 managers, entrepreneurs, researchers and marketers are expected at the two-day event.
