Ljubljana, 07 April (STA) - Labour Force Survey unemployment in Slovenia stood at 5.9% in 2009, up 1.5 percentage points over 2008, data released by the Statistics Office on Wednesday suggests. The survey is based on the methodology applied by the International Labour Organisation and Eurostat.
The average unemployment rate was at 5.9% among men and at 5.8% among women.
The number of people in employment stood at 981,000, down by 15,000, while the jobless total stood at 61,000, up by 15,000 on 2008.
The number of people in employment was lowest in the first quarter, at 962,000, but picked up later as a result of the law introducing subsidies for shortened working hours.
The statistics office said that unemployment has been steadily increasing since the third quarter in 2008 when it stood at 4.1%, the lowest level since the launch of the Labour Force Survey in Slovenia in 1993.
While unemployment reached 6.4% in final quarter of 2009, it is still under the 9.1% recorded in the spring of 1993.
