Ljubljana, 26 February (STA) - Labour Force Survey unemployment in Slovenia rose to 6.4% in the final quarter of 2009, up from 6.2% the quarter before. The jobless total stood at 67,000, according to preliminary data released by the Statistics Office on Friday.
According to the Labour Force Survey, which is the standard used by the International Labour Organisation and Eurostat, unemployment rate in the first quarter of this year was 6.3% for men and 6.5% for women.
The unemployment rate has been rising steadily since the end of 2008, when it stood at 4.3%. It is highest among young people of less than 24 years of age, of whom as many as 15.2% are unemployed.
The number of people in employment stood at 982,000, a drop of 1.6% on the previous quarter. The most substantial fall was registered among student workers, the Statistics Office said.
In comparison, the registered unemployment rate at the end of 2009 stood at 10.1%, up 0.7 percentage points on the quarter before.
