Ljubljana, 21 December (STA) - Slovenia's leading grocer Mercator has opened its first hypermarket and an Intersport sports equipment shop in Albania, thus extending its presence to a total of seven markets of Southeast Europe.
The company invested EUR 159m in the development of its retail network this year, spending 64% on investments abroad, Mercator stated in Monday's press release. This resulted in 97,112 square metres of new retail areas.
Having opened a hypermarket in Bulgaria's Stara Zagora in early October, and an additional one in Tirana last Saturday, the Slovenian retailer entered two new markets in SE Europe.
The Mercator group now has a total of 1.2 million sq meters of sales areas. Only this year the company opened in its own or rented buildings nine hypermarkets, 12 supermarkets, 14 self-service shops and a score of other types of outlets.
Mercator's plans for next year include EUR 120m investments in capital goods, 70.2% of which will be invested in new retail facilities. Investments in foreign markets will represent 54.8%.
