Ljubljana, 25 January (STA) - Some 2.7 million of tourists visited Slovenia in 2009, 1% less than the year before, according to the preliminary data of the Statistics Office. In December, the number of guests amounted to 160,000, down 2% compared to the same month in 2008.
The fall in December figures is the result of a smaller number of Slovenian guests (-6% to 68,452), while the number of foreign tourists was up by 1% to 91,661.
However, at the annual level the number of foreign tourists fell by 6% to 1.67 million, while the number of Slovenians visiting the country's sites and resorts increased by 6% to 1.05 million.
The number of overnight stays in December stood at 436,772, down 5% year-on-year. Half of them were generated by foreign tourists, with Italians topping the list, followed by Austrians, Croatians, Germans and Serbians.
Some 42% of the overnight stays were recored in spas, 23% in mountain resorts, and 14% on the coast and Ljubljana.
Through the entire year, 8.29 million overnight stays were recorded, 1% less than in 2009.
