Rijeka, 04 July (STA) - The rail construction firm SŽ-ŽGP of the national railways operator Slovenske Železnice has been picked for a project of reconstructing the railway network in the Croatian Rijeka port. The subsidiary will sign the EUR 21.5 million contract on Thursday.
The firm's director Tine Svoljšak told the STA that this was the first time that SŽ-ŽGP had secured such a major deal abroad.
Apart from reconstructing the network, the firm will also perform demolition work, modernise a logistics platform as well as reconstruct a link to a passenger train station.
The project is expected to be completed in two years' time. The signing of the contract will be attended by the Croatian Infrastructure Minister Oleg Butković.
According to Svoljšak, the works will start within 42 days after the signing. He added that the company had already done construction work in Montenegro and Serbia, but the Rijeka project was the biggest so far to be carried out outside Slovenia.
The project is one of the seven Rijeka port projects co-funded by the EU. The administration of the country's biggest port has confirmed that the EU Connecting Europe Facility funding instrument earmarked EUR 132.8 million for the projects.
