Maribor, 04 April (STA) - Engineering company Vorteks was declared this year's best startup as the Podim 2012 entrepreneurship conference concluded in Maribor on Wednesday. Economic Development and Technology Minister Radovan Žerjav handed out the award to the company's co-founder Peter Frantar.
Vorteks combines the engineering know-how of Siop elektronika and the expertise in lean entrepreneurship of Zaria iM, the jury said.
The company's first challenge is to launch a new type of core-less and brush-less flat electric motor for which it currently has a conceptual prototype.
The motor, developed in cooperation with Europe's biggest manufacturer of compressor motors for vacuum cleaners, Slovenian company Domel, is to be used in electric vehicles, garden tools and household appliances.
Meanwhile, nautical company Weber Marine was awarded for the best business plan. The jury's head Miroslav Rebernik described it as "clear, objective, understandable and transparent".
The winners were selected by a 17-member jury among five finalists. A record 124 startups applied for the fifth contest organised by institutions promoting entrepreneurship, Tovarna podjemov, Tehnološki park Ljubljana and Public Agency for Entrepreneurship and Foreign Investments.
